Shipping in Aberaeron

Many fishing boats sailed from Aberaeron prior to the building of the harbour with many of the local farming community taking to the sea during the legendary herring season. Later when herring stocks fell, shipbuilding grew in importance. Many fine ships were built during the mid half of the 19th century.

Financed and manned by the townsmen they were used not only for coastal trading but traded as far afield as Scandinavia, the mediterrenean and the Americas. A similar ship can currently be seen docked near Cardigan bridge, 20 miles south of Aberaeron. Towards the end of the 19th century, steam ships took over the work and they themselves were superseded by the coming of the Aberaeron railway in 1911. © Carwyn Evans
